Instructional Design Portfolio
Advancing effective learning wherever learning is happening.
Engaged Learning
This online module provided instruction for first-year medical students in an Embryology course. They are guided through a series of virtual cases in the setting of their third-year clerkship rotations. I used Articulate Storyline to create the course and you can visit the course by clicking on the image to the right. My ability to design instructional interventions, plan and manage instructional design projects and competency with Articulate Storyline are highlighted in this project.
Improving Outcomes
In the project, my partner and I developed a course for the American Geriatrics Society, a hypothetical client, to provide training to physicians serving patients who are accompanied by a health care proxy so that the physician learner would understand and be able to deal with common obstacles in cooperative care. My partner and I were perfectly paired as her interest in elder care allowed her to contribute critical information to the content side of our project and my knowledge and experience with medical education provided key information for processes and procedures. I showcased my ability to identify and describe a target population and environmental characteristics, select and use analysis techniques for determining instructional content and to organize instructional programs and/or products to be designed, developed, and evaluated during this project.
EduMed Course
I developed an online module for one portion of the overall course. This module provided instruction on the OODA Loop, a decision-making model that physicians could use to overcome common problems facing physicians providing care for patients with health care proxies. I was responsible for the entire module - from design to content. I used Weebly to create the site and you can visit the course by clicking on the image to the right. The EduMed course displays my ability to design instructional interventions and plan and manage instructional design projects.
Evaluation and Measurement
I selected and applied appropriate measurement methods and tools; locate, evaluate, and select research literature that supports inquiry related projects; design and implement appropriate measurement instruments for a specific purpose and audience; design and conduct a small-scale usability test; and analyze, interpret data and report finding. Our usability test is highlighted in the video while our final report, Mobile Devices in Medicinem, is below.
Mobile Devices in Medicine
I had the opportunity to look into the use of mobile devices in medicine. We surveyed physicians practicing in a variety of settings and asked them if, how and how often they use mobile devices in the provision of medical care. During this project, I was responsible for developing and deploying the survey and much of the writing of the report. My partner and I worked together to analyze the data. This project is an example of my ability to conduct research, to design effective questions, and to analyze and synthesize data.
System Analysis
I completed a System Analysis of the current system and proposed changes for processes within the Central Command Joint Intelligence Center. These processes have since changed and this information is in no way classified or sensitive. The report would serve as a foundational step in creating training to meet commanders' desire to implement new processes and procedures and highlights my written communication and analytic skills.
Hurricane Preparedness
Our team, consisting of five local members and one participating from Ohio, produced a hurricane preparedness video. As a member of the team, my responsibilities included general project management and oversight, coordinating video shoots and editing sessions. Following filming, we used Camtasia to edit the raw video footage and to add audio clips. Once the video was complete, we published our product on Google+ as well as YouTube. Our concussion video, which I edited and produced, is hightlighted to the right, but the remainder are available on my YouTube channel here.
Literature Review
I conducted a literature review on androgogy's applicability in medical education and its impact on distance learning for medical professionals. I was able to learn how to Evaluate instructional and non-instructional interventions during this project, which also honed my research and analysis skills and allowed me to practice my presentation skills when I presented my findings to my classmates at the end of the semester.
